Facing Egress: Picturing this Age by Eric Klatt
Nan Phelps Shows

Eric Klatt’s new exhibition of nature photography FACING EGRESS: Picturing this Age, opening Saturday, April 2, is a seduction, a puzzle, and a challenge.

“I think of it more as an installation,” says Klatt, a local photographer and former photography instructor. Certainly, the 15 images in the compact show meet the compositional standards of beauty one expects of an “exhibit.”

But true to Klatt’s interdisciplinary approach to art and photography, the photographs also speak in relationship to each other in the intimate exhibition space, as well as to the audience, offering deeper insight to the visitor who takes the time to experience the work – the “installation” aspect of the event.

RECEPTION: Sat., April 2, 2016, 4-8pm
SHOW April 2 - April 30, 2016
during studio hours, and by appointment.
LOCATION Nan Phelps Photography
398 Colusa Avenue (on Colusa Circle)
Berkeley, Ca 94707
HOURS Thursdays & Fridays 12pm~4pm Saturdays 10~4 and by appointment

In FACING EGRESS: Picturing this Age, Klatt seduces the viewer into the beauty of photograph, and from this intimate viewpoint, the viewer first senses, then understands, his or her own subtle – or not so subtle - imprint on the natural landscape. The implicit challenge becomes how to take responsibility for this effect, and to consider the implications of inaction.

A student in the legendary San Francisco State photography program of the late ‘70’s where instructors like Don Worth and Jack Welpott incubated what later emerged as a “West Coast” school of photography, Klatt’s work is deeply rooted in the natural environment and a sense of place. In particular, Klatt is known for his focused perspective on the built environment and its interaction with the natural world.

On the edge of believability, Goodman’s photographs reveal hidden worlds that grasp the majesty and fleetingness of life. She uses the camera as a paintbrush, creating images from a little beyond the moment. Her botanicals reflect our own mortality and beauty - lovely and unapologetic.

Toby was born in NYC in 1955. She took drawing classes at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and zigzagged across the country by thumb, train, car and plane before receiving a BFA in Photography and Printmaking from CCA(C), in 1979. She soon found herself a successful fine art photographer, represented by The Susan Spiritus Gallery in Newport Beach, The Photographer's Gallery in Palo Alto, and The Foster Goldstrom Gallery in San Francisco, Suzy Locke and Associates in Oakland and The Andrea Schwartz Gallery in San Francisco. The central theme of "Luminous Spheres" is the delicate play of natural light on the landscape. In Knapp's own words: "The transient beauty of the natural world inspires me. I am drawn to walk along the trails, ridges and beaches of this precious world. Every once in a while, I'm blessed to see and record a moment of light that fills me with wonder. I hope the images that I make will do the same for you." Knapp's work has been widely exhibited and published, appearing in Terry Hope's "The World's Top Photographers: Landscape"; Jules Evens' "Natural History of Point Reyes Peninsula"; and Kaufman & Zaleski's "Gifts of the Spirit". martyknapp.com/
